Playroom Assistant
PLAYROOM ASSISTANT
POSITION SUMMARY
The Playroom Assistant establishes, implements, and maintains a therapeutic environment in the playroom. They document program attendees, maintain a safe and appropriate play space, supervise volunteers, clean toys and playroom, assist with art activities, assist with special events and other activities as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
● Maintain daily, open communication with staff, parents, and supervisor
● Maintain confidentiality
● Maintain policies and procedures, including disciplinary policies
● Maintain and schedule weekly and monthly activities
● Plan and implement activities that meet the physical, intellectual, emotional and
social needs of their students, providing proper equipment
● Develop weekly plans and implements age appropriate curriculum (lesson
plans) to nurture and stimulate all domains of children’s development in their
care.
● Develop classroom activities, plan and implement in accordance with curriculum objectives, that meet physical, social, emotional and developmental needs program philosophy
● Provides a developmentally appropriate classroom environment that reflects the
children’s learning and growth.
o Participate in on-going in-service and education development
opportunities provided by Saint Basil’s Academy, and participate in the
ongoing development and evaluation of the program’s goals and
objectives
● Build children’s self-esteem through positive guidance and nurturing,
while implementing positive discipline
● Promote literacy and early education, as well as age-appropriate experiences and activities for children, including storytelling, games, songs, arts and crafts
● Provide a safe and secure environment where children feel comfortable
● Adapt daily routines to meet the interest and needs of the individual child and the
group, ensuring all children are supervised at all times
● Ensure that the classroom, equipment, and bathroom is clean, well-maintained,
and safe, clean plastic toys with bleach/water mixture once a week, cleans surfaces before and after meals, and at the end of each day or as needed during day
● Observe children and make notes of progress and development
● Plan age appropriate field trips
● Complete incident reports and share with staff, parents, and supervisor
● Attend team meetings
● Help plan curriculum for upcoming school year
● Complete other duties and responsibilities as assigned by clinical, youth program,
and teaching supervisors
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
- Associate degree in Childcare Development, Education, or related field
- 1-2 years of related experience
- Able to explain playroom guidelines, policies related to patient safety and infection control to children, families, volunteers, and staff.
- Needs to know how to maintain safe environment, and role to assume in a code or other hospital situation
